Wicked: Bowen Yang teases Fiyero’s “unspoken bisexual energy” in musical blockbuster

Bowen Yang has given fans another exciting reason to secure tickets for the highly anticipated Wicked film.

Throughout this past week, the Saturday Night Live actor and his Fire Island co-star Matt Rogers have celebrated their popular podcast – Las Culturistas – reaching 400 episodes.

As a way to fully soak in the incredible milestone, the duo shared their “Iconic 400” list, which highlighted the biggest figures that have had a “impact” on pop culture.

Of course, Yang and Rogers did not disappoint with their selection, with Jenna Ortega, Ursula, Rosalía, JC Chasez, Cole Escola, The Bride of Frankenstein making the list.

However, in true Las Culturistas fashion, the exciting occasion also included some behind-the-scenes tea, specifically in regard to the upcoming film Wicked.

While placing the “Fiyeros played by gay men” in the 336 spot, the pair chatted about some of the notable actors that have taken on the role, including Bailey.

After Rogers highlighted the Bridgerton star’s “tushy character poster for Wicked, Yang teased that the Bridgerton star will be bringing a queer flare to Fiyero.

“I’m not going to spoil it. He gives an unspoken bisexual energy to Fiyero in the movie. It’s incredible, The Monkey King star exclaimed.

Before moving on to the next figure, Yang teased that his character Pfannee and Bailey’s Fiyero “might have a moment in the film.

This isn’t the first time the beloved comedian has spilt some major Wicked tea.

During a February episode of Las Culturistas, Yang revealed: “I’m really showing my range, I’m playing a gay guy. But you know, I’m playing a hater for the first time. He’s not just any gay guy – Pfannee is a hater. This guy sucks! Frankly, he’s a racist. He sees a green person, and he goes, ‘I’m gonna f***ing ruin that person’s life.‘”

The 33-year-old also said that he collaborated with director Jon M. Chu on how he could give his character more depth.

“I will say, the discussions going into Pfannee… Jon M. Chu, god bless him, is a director, down. No small parts. He’s like, ‘Let’s sit down and talk about Pfannee and ShenShen,‘” he explained.

“I think we arrived at something really interesting. I can’t wait for you guys to see.”

The first of two Wicked films will hit theatres on 27 November.

Like the stage production of the same name, the forthcoming blockbuster tells the beloved “untold story of Elphaba Thropp (Erivo), a misunderstood (and powerful) woman as a result of her green skin, and her heartwarming friendship with Galinda Upland (Grande), a popular blondie “gilded by privilege and ambition.”

Wicked’s cast is absolutely stacked, with supporting performances from Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Shiz University’s headmistress Madame Morrible, and Ethan Slater (Spongebob Squarepants) as Boq, an “altruistic Munchkin student”.

More star power incoming: newcomer Marissa Bode as Elphaba’s “favoured sister Nessarose, Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park) as the Wizard of Oz, Bronwyn James (Harlots) as ShenShen and Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman) as original character Miss Coddle.
