Mean Girls: OG cast might not return to movie musical over “disrespectful” money offer
This is so not fetch! The original stars of Mean Girls might not return for the upcoming movie musical
Back in December, Paramount+ announced that a film based on the teen comedy’s hit Broadway musical adaptation was officially in the works.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the feature is set to be written by Tina Fey – who wrote the original film – and produced by SNL creator Lorne Michaels.
As for the cast, The Sex Lives of College Girls star Renee Rapp and Moana’s Auli’i Cravalho have signed on to play power-hungry Queen Bee Regina George and sarcastic art student Janis Sarkisian, respectively.
In addition to Rapp and Cravalho, Senior year’s Angourice Rice is set to portray transfer student Cady Heron, with A Strange Loop powerhouse Jaquel Spivey joining as Janis’ openly gay best friend, Damian Hubbard.
Lastly, the film is set to see the return of Fey and Tim Meadows as Mrs Norbury and Principal Duvall.
While the project is set to feature some familiar faces, it looks like the original Plastics might not be returning to “Girl World.”
According to a report from Page Six, Lindsay Lohan (Cady Heron), Rachel McAdams (Regina George), Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith), and Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners) were in negotiations to appear in undisclosed roles.
However, conversations regarding their return came to a halt due to Paramount giving the four beloved stars a “disrespectful” money offer.
“Paramount Pictures doesn’t want to pay the girls what they are worth,” a source told the news outlet.
“All four girls were willing to come back, but Paramount has not been respectful of what they are worth.”
The source also claimed they were offered a “fraction” of what Fey is reportedly making – which is a “seven-figure deal” for her role, writing, and producing.
“Whether they appear in a cameo appearance or they have six pages of script, it doesn’t matter. [The money offered] is disrespectful,” another insider told Page Six.
In response to the news, fans flocked to Twitter to express their disappointment.
One fan wrote: “Give these ladies what they deserve, Mean Girls would be nothing without them @paramountplus @ParamountPics.”
Another fan tweeted: “They need to pay them whatever they wanted and ADD a zero because wtf … otherwise we’re cancelling our paramount+ subscriptions.”
The original Mean Girls was first released in 2004. The film, which was based on Rosalind Wiseman’s hit book Queen Bees and Wannabes, followed Cady Heron a former home school student who moves to an Illinois suburb from Africa.
Back in 2004, moviegoers were first introduced to Mean Girls and the ever-changing hierarchy of “Girl World.”
In the years following its release, the film and its hilarious one-liners have remained a prominent fixture in pop culture.
While the OG star’s involvement in the musical film is up in the air, it’s safe to say that fans are eager to see them return to their Plastic roots.
