Interview with the Vampire renewed for season 3

Ahead of the season two finale, AMC has renewed Interview with the Vampire for a third season.

Based on Anne Rice’s critically acclaimed Vampire Chronicles series, the gothic horror respectively stars Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid as Louis de Pointe du Lac and Lestat de Lioncourt.

Created by Rolin Jones, season one begins with Louis retelling his life story to journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian), including his violent romance with Lestat and their father-daughter relationship with newbie vampire Claudia (Bailey Bass/Delainey Hayles).

Following a one-year hiatus, Interview with the Vampire returned for a second season in May, following Louis and Claudia as they travel to Europe in search for more vampires, while the former is haunted by the ghost of Lestat.

Both seasons have received unanimous critical acclaim, holding a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise aimed at the performances of Anderson and Reid. Compared to the 1994 film, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, Interview with the Vampire has also been lauded for faithfully adapting the novel’s queer themes.

Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, said of the renewal in a statement: “When you buy the rights to 18 Anne Rice novels that have sold more than 150 million copies, in your wildest dreams you hope there’s a show as good as ‘Interview’ on the other end.

“What Rolin has done with these stories and characters, working so closely with Mark, as the steward of this universe, has exceeded the loftiest version of our expectations.

“We can’t wait to see where this creative team takes the series from here and know we are walking alongside an incredibly loyal and passionate base of fans who feel as strongly about this material as we do.”

Jones praised the “brilliant casts and crews of the first two seasons”, as well as the “rabid, beautifully unwell fandom that scaled the castle walls to get us to this day”.

“Thank you to Dan McDermott, Ben Davis for the funds and tools to continue the great work of dramatizing Anne Rice’s extraordinary novels.,” he said.

“And sincere apologies to the family and friends of actor Sam Reid, for the possession that continues to this day. Monsieur L extends his promise to return his body upon cancellation (may that evening never come.)”

According to reports, season three will adapt the second book in Rice’s series, The Vampire Lestat.

The first season of Interview with the Vampire is streaming in the UK on BBC iPlayer.
