Drag Race’s Sasha Colby says drag daughter Chappell Roan ‘could be the next Gaga or Madonna’
Sasha Colby is celebrating the rise of her drag daughter, Chappell Roan.
The legendary entertainer, who memorably conquered the 15th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, recently made the Midwest Princess a member of her drag family.
The initiation came to be following numerous instances of Roan expressing her love and adoration for Colby and offering her own spin on her classic quote, “I’m your favourite drag queen’s favourite drag queen” (swapping out “queen” for “artist”).
She paid homage to Colby at Coachella, and later explained her reverence for the queen during an appearance on The Tonight Show.
After joining forces for a performance of ‘Hot to Go!’ at the Capitol Hill Block Party in Seattle, Washington, Colby introduced Roan ahead of her acclaimed performance of ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ at the 2024 VMAs.
In a recent essay for Harper’s Bazaar, Colby reflected on when she first became acquainted with Roan, revealing that she wasn’t aware of her and her artistry until Coachella.
“To be quite honest, my old ass, I’m like, ‘Who’s Chappell Roan?’ And then my friend who does my makeup, he’s like, ‘Sis, we listen to her all the time. Before the rebranding, the Midwest Princess moment, you would listen to her sad girl songs,’” she wrote.
“I didn’t really have time to let it sink in, and I kind of left it alone. But then on Fallon, she said it again, and she actually said, “That’s Sasha Colby’s line.” That was really cool for her to not only quote me but then cite me as well. So I was like, Fine, I’ll meet her.“

Following their aforementioned performance of Roan’s sleeper hit ‘Hot to Go!’, the iconic drag queen “made her a Colby right then and there” after bonding backstage.
Colby continued to praise Roan’s talent and the way in which she unapologetically expresses her queerness: “The songs are great. The writing is great. Her voice is insane.
“Chappell’s on a whole other level, and it’s pretty invasive. No one else knows what she’s going through. She could be the next Gaga of our generation or Madonna, but even the stars can’t relate to each other. I’m sure it’s really lonely.
“There’s no support group. Still, I loved how when she had to cancel that last music festival, each of the artists did a cover of one of her songs. They knew how much of an impact she’s already had.”
Roan shot to fame earlier this year following the release of ‘Good Luck, Babe!’, which was lauded for its overt lesbian themes and exploration of compulsory heterosexuality.
Her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess subsequently began to climb charts across the world, attaining number-one positions in the UK, Ireland and New Zealand.
Roan later took home ‘Best New Artist’ at the VMAs, and appeared as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, where she performed the fan-favourite bop ‘Pink Pony Club’ and new sapphic country-pop track ‘The Giver’.
