PrEP slutshaming is still alive and well – and it’s harming us all

In an excerpt from her forthcoming book ‘Sluts’, Beth Ashley explores how the invention of PrEP birthed a new form of slutshaming in the queer community. WORDS BY BETH ASHLEY HEADER BY YOSEF PHELAN PrEP is one of the best inventions to ever grace this earth. In fact, it’s so brilliant that I can’t believe we don’t have weekly parades celebrating its arrival. Yet somehow slut-shaming manages to sneak its way into discussions about it. A revolution in the HIV and AIDS crisis, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) was approved for use…

Why is Germany so low on PrEP and will HIV infections now rise?

A severe shortage of HIV prevention drugs in Germany has sparked fears of a spike in infections over coming months, with doctors urging government to step in and keep tens of thousands safe. Almost 90% of Germany’s doctor surgeries and pharmacies are affected by the shortages of PrEP pills, according to a survey by dagnä, an association of HIV specialists. The shortfall could drag on until April, prompting experts to suggest alternate solutions – be it lower dosage or new drug supplies – to keep people safe. Here’s what you…

Indian LGBTQ+ groups push to widen access to HIV prevention drug PrEP

Every morning, Neharika Ravalkar takes a pill that stops her joining the millions of Indians who are HIV-positive. As a trans woman, Ravalkar is among the groups at highest risk of HIV. But she is among a lucky minority taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication as cost, lack of awareness and stigma all hamper access in the South Asian nation. “PrEP is like a bodyguard for me,” said Ravalkar, who primarily scrapes a living from begging in Pune, western India “I’ve been helping people in my community to take it and…

Employers in Texas no longer required to cover HIV prevention drugs

A federal judge in Texas stated that employers should not be forced to cover PrEP medication if it violates the company’s religious beliefs. The ruling concluded that providing the drugs makes company owners “complicit in facilitating homosexual behaviour”. US district judge Reed O’Connor made the judgement on 7 September. He ruled in favour of Braidwood Management, a Christian-owned company based in Texas, which argued it was not required to cover the costs of two PrEP drugs, Truvada and Descovy. Legal experts, such as Chris Geidner, noted that O’Connor has a…

Long-acting PrEP could be available as soon as early-2022

America is on the brink of approving a long-acting HIV prevention medication that is easier to take than daily PrEP. On 23 September, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave cabotegravir priority review status. This means the drug will undergo a review period of six months as opposed to the usual 10. Cabotegravir, commercially known as Cabenuva, is a long-acting version of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and is made by ViiV Healthcare. If approved, the drug would make history by becoming the first of its kind on the market. Unlike…
