The Rocky Horror Show is a riotous night out – review

This may come as a surprise, given the musical is now more than 50 years old, but we’ve never actually seen the Rocky Horror Show. As such, we didn’t quite know what to expect from this production, which has opened at London’s Dominion Theatre this week, and which will tour the UK through to summer 2025. Turns out it’s actually really good fun – this trip to the theatre was one of the most riotous nights out we’ve had in a while. We should caveat this by saying that the…

Why Am I So Single? is a fun new queer musical with great songs – review

We’re not quite sure where to start with a show like Why Am I So Single? – it’s arrived on the West End amid much fanfare and with a huge weight of expectation. This is the second musical from Marlow and Moss, the writers of Six, which of course is not just a runaway success in London but has toured internationally and is still enjoying a successful Broadway run too. Comparisons are inevitable, but Marlow and Moss have not tried to replicate the formula – while Six plays out more…

Fiddler on the Roof is a thoughtful revival which holds a mirror up to society – review

We’re big fans of a night out at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park – if you can pick a good evening for it (this summer has been rather unpredictable, unfortunately) then you’re in for a magical evening. The season usually ends with a musical, and this year is no different: for 2024 we have a revival of Fiddler on the Roof, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Jordan Fein directs this classic musical about smalltown life in the Jewish village of Anatevka. For those who haven’t…

The Baker’s Wife is a quaint and charming musical – review

You would be forgiven for not knowing The Baker’s Wife – although there are some big names behind it, the show never made it to Broadway and only enjoyed a brief West End run back in 1989, closing after 56 performances – it didn’t sell well, despite positive reviews. With music by Stephen Schwarz (Wicked, Prince of Egypt) and book by Joseph Stein (Fiddler on the Roof), it’s now enjoying a revival in London, in a cute-as-a-pie new production at the Menier Chocolate Factory, directed by Gordon Greenberg. We’ll say this…

Your Lie in April has some good songs but is sadly let down by a clunky script – review

We really, really wanted to like Your Lie in April. The story itself is already a success: the original manga, by Naoshi Arakawa, sold over 5 million copies and was subsequently adapted into an anime TV series and then a feature film. A stage musical version opened in Tokyo in 2022, which has now been translated into English. A concert version played in London earlier this year at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and was well-received; it has now made its fully-staged West End debut at the Harold Pinter Theatre.…

All-star revival of Kiss Me, Kate is a great night out – review

We’re not usually ones for drawing comparisons here but with Kiss Me, Kate it’s difficult not to. The Barbican Theatre had a smash hit on its hands in the summer of 2021 – so successful, in fact, that they repeated the exact same production in the summer of 2022 – with a revival of Cole Porter’s classic musical Anything Goes. Producers Trafalgar Entertainment appear to think they’re on to a winning formula, and for this summer’s season at The Barbian they’re revived another of Porter’s hit musicals in Kiss Me,…

DIVA: Live From Hell! is a high-camp musical that knows its audience – review

We first went to check out DIVA: Live From Hell! when it made its UK debut at the Turbine Theatre in Battersea back in 2022 and had a lot of fun, describing it as “a devilish delight”. That same production has been resurrected two years later at the new King’s Head Theatre in Islington, just around the corner from the original location of the iconic north London pub theatre, ahead of a run at this summer’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. A loose retelling of All About Eve, the show sees Luke…

New cast delights as hit musical Operation Mincemeat extends run for the 9th time

If you’ve still not heard of Operation Mincemeat… where have you been? We’re huge fans of the hit West End musical here at GAY TIMES – we reviewed the 2021 run at the Southwark Playhouse, the 2022 run at Riverside Studios and 2023’s West End transfer at the Fortune Theatre – each time awarding it a perfect 5/5. Don’t just take our word for it, though: it’s been a hit with pretty much all the critics – it’s the best-reviewed show ever to grace London’s West End, and has already…

Frances Ruffelle delivers a captivating high-camp performance in revival of Closer to Heaven – review

We’ve been keen to check out Closer to Heaven for some time, so when this revival was announced at the cosy Turbine Theatre down by Battersea Power Station, we knew we had to be there to check it out. For those unfamiliar, it’s a musical from 2001 with a book by Jonathan Harvey (best known for seminal gay play Beautiful Thing) and original songs by iconic queer pop duo Pet Shop Boys. The show has spawned a spin-off sequel called Musik which we’ve actually already seen – which is a…

Jerry’s Girls is a lighthearted and enjoyable musical revue show – review

You may not be aware of Jerry’s Girls but there’s a fair chance you’ll be familiar with the back catalogue of composer and lyricist Jerry Herman. He’s written the songs for a range of well-known musicals – most famously Hello, Dolly! and La Cage aux Folles – and Jerry’s Girls is a musical revue based on the biggest hits from his most famous shows. The show has its origins in New York nightclubs in the early 1980s, but was officially commissioned as a full-scale musical revue following the success of…
