How sanctions on Uganda aim to undo anti-LGBTQ+ law

Uganda’s Constitutional Court is expected to rule in the coming weeks on a legal challenge to last year’s Anti-Homosexuality Act, which allows the death penalty for some same-sex acts and 20 years in jail for “promoting” homosexuality. LGBTQIA+ rights activists, who launched the appeal, are also urging the international community to intensify pressure on the Ugandan government to repeal the law by imposing more sanctions, but emphasised that such penalties should be targeted. “We are not calling for blanket sanctions on Uganda. They should not affect vulnerable Ugandans,” said Frank…

Uganda: Activists finalise appeal to overturn extreme Anti-Homosexuality Act

Civil society groups in Uganda have completed their pretrial appeal against the Anti-Homosexuality Act, prior to a full hearing later in the month. Petitioners have argued that the law violates fundamental rights guaranteed under the Ugandan constitution and international human rights law, including those stipulated in the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights, as reported by Human Rights Watch. On 2 May, Uganda’s Parliament passed anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation titled the Anti-Homosexuality Bill – legislation that is considered one of the most brutal in the world. An earlier version of the…

Majority of LGBTQ+ youth screen positive for depression, survey finds

Approximately 55.1 per cent of all LGBTQ+ youth screen positive for depression, according to a new survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). The 2023 LGBTQ+ Report compiled the findings of the HRC’s 2022 Youth Survey. The results revealed “persistent, serious challenges for LGBTQ+ youth” across the USA, continuing the trends observed by its 2017 study. The statistic was even higher for trans and gender-expansive youth, with 60 per cent screening positive for depression. The report also investigated the safety and comfort of LGBTQ+ youth in home and school environments.…

Anti-Homosexuality Bill: Uganda passes updated version of brutal law

Uganda’s parliament has passed one of the world’s cruellest anti-LGBTQ+ laws, the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, for a second time. The legislation was originally passed on 21 March and would have made identifying as LGBTQ+ a criminal offence. However, President Yoweri Museveni refused to sign it and instead returned it to parliament with recommended changes, including adding a differentiation between engaging in homosexual acts and identifying as LGBTQ+. The updated version of the law would no longer criminalise people for identifying as a member of the community, though it does propose jail…

“Close to sinful”: Joe Biden condemns Florida’s “cruel” anti-LGBTQ+ laws

President Joe Biden has slammed “cruel” Republican efforts to roll back LGBTQ+ rights across the US, describing them as “close to sinful”. Discussing the legislation during an interview with The Daily Show’s Kal Penn, the 80-year-old directly referenced Florida’s numerous anti-LGBTQ+ bills. “What’s going on in Florida is, as my mother would say, close to sinful,” he said. “It’s just terrible what they’re doing.” He continued: “It’s not like a kid wakes up one morning and says, ‘You know, I decided I want to become a man or I want…

Tennessee bans public drag shows and gender-affirming care for children

Tennessee has introduced legislation banning public drag performances and gender-affirming care for trans+ children. The new laws were signed by Republican governor Bill Lee on 2 March, with the state becoming the first in the US to restrict drag shows. Although the word “drag” does not appear in the bill, the definition of adult cabaret has been changed to mean “adult-oriented performances that are harmful to minors”. It puts “male or female impersonators” within the category alongside go-go dancers, exotic dancers and strippers. Such performances, including drag shows, will be…

Legislation that would see drag shows classified as “adult-oriented” in the same way as strip clubs and adult theatres has been approved by the Arkansas Senate. Drag performances would also be prohibited from taking place on public property and would not be able to happen within 1,000 feet of churches, schools, parks and libraries. Senate Bill 43 (SB43) was passed on 24 January in a 29-6 party line vote which saw all six of the chamber’s Democrats opposing. It will now head to the majority-Republican House where, if passed, will…

“Resounding victory” for LGBTQ+ people as Barbados strikes down two discriminatory laws

Barbados has become the fourth Commonwealth country to strike down discriminatory anti-LGBTQ+ laws this year alone. The country’s High Court made the decision to repeal Sections 9 and 12 of the Barbados Sexual Offences Act, also known as the “buggery” and “indecency laws”, which criminalised consensual same-sex intimacy. Punishments for convictions under Section 9 could be as severe as life imprisonment for men engaging in such activity, while Section 12 could result in 10 years imprisonment for both men and women. The oral decision handed down on 12 December will…
