Why anti-LGBTQ legislation in Africa is a western problem

A year on from the passing of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act, journalist Desmond Vincent reflects on the UK’s role in promoting homophobia and transphobia internationally. WORDS BY DESMOND VINCENT HEADER DESIGN YOSEF PHELAN Queer media representation is down while transphobic legislation and scaremongering are on the up – across the west, recent years have seen a regression in terms of queer and trans equality. Russia expands discriminatory ‘LGBT propaganda’ law to all citizens

President Vladimir Putin has signed a law expanding Russia’s ‘LGBT propaganda’ restrictions to all adults. The move effectively outlaws any public expression of LGBTQ+ behaviour or lifestyle in the country. The original version of it was implemented in 2013 and put a ban on the promotion of all “non-traditional” sexual relationships among minors. It has since been used as justification to stop Pride marches, prevent minors from watching content with LGBTQ+ themes and to detain activists. Under the new legislation, which was signed into law by Putin on 5 December,…

‘Don’t Say Gay’: Florida’s “hateful” bill “designed to attack LGBTQI+ kids” continues to advance

Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill has continued to make its way through state legislature, bringing it even closer to reality. The bill, which is part of a Parental Rights in Education proposal, is being sponsored by Republican State Senator Dennis Baxley. LGBTQ+ activists are fearful that if House Bill 1557 and its companion Senate Bill 1834 are signed into law, they could have the power to totally limit any discussions or lessons on identity, the community’s history and the oppression it has faced.
