US judge throws out Texas ban on drag acts, calls it unconstitutional

A new Texan law limiting public drag performance has been ruled unconstitutional on speech, by a federal judge and permanently forbade enforcement of it. U.S. District Judge David Hittner wrote in the 56 page ruling: “This is no different than a person’s opinion on certain comedy or genres of music, but that alone does not strip First Amendment protection. Not all people will like or condone certain performances.” Hittner ruled that the Texas law was discriminatory and improperly vague. He found that Senate Bill 12 “impermissibly infringes on the First…

Texas anti-drag bill blocked again by federal judge

A US judge has extended a temporary order preventing the application of Texas’ law limiting drag performances.   US District Court Judge David Hittner of the Southern District of Texas extended a temporary restrainer order for two weeks which prevents the enforcement of Senate Bill 12.  Senate Bill 12, which restricts “sexually oriented performances” was set to go into effect on 1 September and was originally passed back in April. Bill 12 aims to ban performances on public property where a performance will be viewed by attendees under the age of…

Hayley Kiyoko defies Tennessee police, brings drag queens on stage

Hayley Kiyoko has spoken out after a police officer warned her against bringing drag queens on stage at her concert in Nashville, Tennessee. In a video shared to the singer-songwriter’s Instagram on 2 May, she told fans she was “upset” after an “unbelievable” encounter with an undercover police officer at the venue. “Apparently my show, because it’s all ages, we can’t have drag performers at my show,” she tearfully explained. “So, we’re trying to figure out if there’s a workaround or what this situation is, but this is fucked up.…

Lizzo teams up with Drag Race stars during Tennessee concert: “Support your drag entertainers!”

Pop icon Lizzo partnered up with Drag Race stars to condemn Tennessee’s anti-drag legislation. Over the last few months, Republican lawmakers across the United States have targeted the drag community by spewing hateful rhetoric and introducing an array of anti- drag bills. In March, Tennessee’s Republican governor Bill Lee signed Senate Bill 3 into law, making it the first state in the US to ban public drag shows. While a federal judge has temporarily blocked the harmful law until 26 May, the anti-drag rhetoric is showing no signs of slowing down. In…

Drag Race star BenDeLaCreme on “terrifying” anti-drag bills: “We need to be angry”

BenDeLaCreme has spoken out against the “overwhelming” amount of anti-drag and anti-trans legislation being introduced in various US state legislatures. Speaking to GAY TIMES shortly after Tennessee became the first US state to ban public drag performances entirely, the Drag Race legend explained that “it’s hard to even have a reaction” to the anti-drag push coming from Republicans. SB003 would see drag shows prevented from taking place within 1,000 feet of a school, church or park if there is any possibility of a minor seeing – even if it is…

Federal judge extends restraining order against Tennessee’s anti-drag ban

A federal judge has extended the restraining order against Tennessee’s anti-drag ban.  Back in March, Republican governor Bill Lee signed Senate Bill 3 into law, making it the first state in the US to ban public drag shows. Fortunately, a day before the archaic law was set to go into effect, Judge Thomas Parker issued a 14-day temporary order blocking the legislation.  The ruling was reached after the Memphis-based LGBTQ+ theatre group, Friends of George’s, filed a lawsuit against the state.  “The United States Constitution – a law that is supreme…

Federal judge temporarily blocks Tennessee’s archaic anti-drag ban

In a massive win for LGBTQ+ rights, a federal judge has temporarily stopped Tennessee’s anti-drag ban.  On 2 March, Republican governor Bill Lee signed Senate Bill 3 into law, making Tennessee the first state in the US to ban public drag shows. While the word “drag” was not explicitly listed, the legislation prevents any “adult cabaret performances” – which are defined as “male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest” – from operating within 1000 feet of schools, public parks or places of worship. Fortunately…

First US drag show ban stokes fears of violence

Daphne Rio had been performing a weekly drag brunch at a Dallas cafe for nearly a year when a couple slipped in, snapped a slew of pictures then slipped straight back out. Their lightning visit set off alarm bells for Rio, no stranger to the drag circuit after 8 years of performing in a host of Dallas bars and clubs. So it came as no surprise when, days later, images of Rio and her fellow performers showed up in a newsletter distributed by a right-wing group that organizes protests against…
