Bridgerton star says she’s ‘in love with a woman’ in Pride Month post

Bridgerton star Jessica Madsen has thanked fans for all their “beautiful messages” after continuing to open up about her identity.

The actress, who plays Cressida Cowper in Netflix’s period drama, commemorated the start of Pride Month (1 June) by publicly sharing that she’s “in love with a woman, loud about it and proud about it!”

Her Instagram post, which included several slides of Pride-related messages and imagery, as well as a short video of Madsen with rainbow rhinestones on her face, was widely celebrated by fans.

Madsen’s Bridgerton co-stars Jonathan Bailey (Anthony Bridgerton), Nicola Coughlan (Penelope Featherington), and Hannah Dodd (Francesca Bridgerton) also extended their love.

Joanna Bobin, who plays Cressida’s mother Lady Araminta Cowper, said: “Go baby girl! Love you”.

“WOW thank you for all your beautiful messages,” Madsen responded.

Madsen previously opened up about her sexuality in a similar Pride Month post last year, where she shared graphics about bisexuality that read “bi af” and “bisexuals are not confused”.

In her caption, she shared: “Bi the way… Happy Pride Month”.

Following Madsen’s more prominent role in season three, which sees her character become closer with Claudia Jessie’s championed Bridgerton sibling Eloise, fans have started shipping the duo as a couple.

In an interview with PRIDEshowrunner Jess Brownell revealed that the introduction of queer-led stories in the Bridgerton universe is a major priority for her, so an Eloise-Cressida romance isn’t… impossible.

“This is a show about love in its many forms, and I think that it’s only right for us to foreground queer love and to tell queer stories,” she told the news outlet.

“I want to see more queer joy on my screens, and that was definitely a priority for me when I stepped into the showrunner role.”

In a separate interview with PRIDE, Coughlan exclaimed that she’s “desperate” for LGBTQIA+ stories to take place in the show.

“I cannot wait. I think it will be so beautiful. The wonderful thing about Bridgerton is it’s an invented world that has never existed,” she added. “So I think there’s so much space there for queer love stories, and I think all love stories deserve to be celebrated.”

The first part of Bridgerton season three is now streaming on Netflix. The second part will follow on 13 June.
