American Psycho: Here’s fans top picks to play the lead in Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation

Fans have already lined up their top choices for the role of Patrick Bateman.

On 18 October, Deadline reported that a new American Psycho film was officially in the works at Lionsgate, with Luca Guadagnino attached as director and Scott Z. Burns penning the script.

While information about the project has been kept under wraps, sources revealed to the news outlet that the film will not be a remake of the 2000 cult classic – which starred Christian Bale – but a new take on Bret Easton Ellis’s book of the same name.

“We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate. Luca is a brilliant artist and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said in a statement.

Since the news was announced, fans have flocked to social media to share their thoughts on the forthcoming film, including their top picks for the role of Patrick Bateman.

One Twitter/X user wrote: “Not even trying to be annoying, but I think Drew Starkey would be great in Luca’s American Psycho he plays crazy so good.”

Another film enthusiast tweeted: “American Psycho remake, here’s your perfect lead actor: Nicholas Chavez.”

A third user added: “Sooo I want Robert Pattinson for the American psycho remake even though the tl wants Jacob Elordi.”

The first film adaptation of American Psycho was released in April 2000.

Directed by Mary Harron, the movie takes place in 1987 and follows Patrick Bateman (Bale), a handsome and wealthy investment banker obsessed with status, success and his appearance.

The official synopsis adds: “He is also a psychotic killer who murders and dismembers both strangers and acquaintances without provocation and purpose.”

Following its release, American Psycho earned rave reviews from critics, with many praising Bale’s dynamic performance, Harron’s directing, and its blend of comedy, horror and satire.

The film has also garnered a cult following and was even adapted into a West End musical, which initially starred House of the Dragon’s Matt Smith, Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey and Spoiler Alert’s Ben Aldridge.

While we’ll have to wait a while for the upcoming American Psycho adaptation, Guadagnino will have plenty of content for LGBTQIA+ fans to consume.

On 27 November, his highly anticipated gay drama Queer, starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey, will kick off its limited theatrical release in the US.

Based on William S. Burrough’s 1985 short novel, the film follows Lee (Craig), an American outcast who flees to Mexico following a drug bust in New Orleans. While in Mexico City, he becomes infatuated with Allerton (Starkey), a discharged serviceman from the American Navy.

Last month, the film held its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival and has since earned a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 62 critics reviews.

As of this writing, an international release date for Queer has yet to be announced. However, Mubi recently scored the rights to the project for the UK, Ireland, Canada and more.

In addition to Queer, Guadagnino is directing After the Hunt – which stars Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri and Chloë Sevigny – and another gay drama titled Separate Rooms, with Josh O’Connor.
